Missouri’s Loews Kansas City Hotel is the first full-service luxury hotel to open downtown in more than 30 years. Rising 24 stories and encompassing 800 rooms, its crisp, modern, minimalist look was designed by Cooper Carry and brought to life with Linetec’s paint and anodize finishing on both the exterior and interior aluminum framing systems.
Contributing to the hotel’s high-profile appearance and high-performance attributes, Linetec finished all of Tubelite Inc.’s curtainwall, window wall, entrance and interior aluminum framing systems. One of Tubelite’s largest completed projects to date, Flynn Midwest LP installed approximately 122,000 square feet of Tubelite’s systems.
Archon Fenestration Technologies, LLC served as the local manufacturers’ representative assisting with Viracon’s glass and Tubelite’s framing product selection, specifications and coordination. Cooper Carry specified the finish types and colors for an eye-catching appearance and long-lasting durability.
Providing a visual landmark within the Kansas City skyline, the hotel’s corner tower displays the red Loews’ brand signage against a silver-reflective glass backdrop and Arcadia Silver finished framing. The exterior framing’s luxurious color was formulated using a 70% PVDF resin-based Duranar® architectural paint coating. Linetec applied it under factory-controlled conditions to meet the industry’s most stringent performance specification, AAMA 2605.
Protecting and enhancing the aluminum framing, these 70% PVDF coatings provide exceptional resistance to color change, gloss loss, chemicals, UV, chalking, erosion, humidity and salt spray. These durable finishes are tested under extreme conditions to ensure they retain their appearance and performance for many years to come.
With an anticipated lifespan of 40 years, anodize offers the most durable, hardest finish available for architectural aluminum products. It requires minimal maintenance, provides excellent wear and abrasion resistance, and delivers long-lasting performance that meets or exceeds the AAMA 611 industry-leading standard. For Loews Kansas City Hotel, Linetec finished many of Tubelite’s aluminum interior framing members in Clear, Dark Bronze and Black Class I anodize.
As a single source solution, Linetec also provided poured-and-debridged ultra-thermal barriers for Tubelite’s systems. Helping maintain year-round interior comfort for Loews’ guests, these barriers mitigate Kansas City’s seasonal temperature extremes ranging from above 100ºF, humid summer days to below-zero, windy, winter nights.
Linetec applies the thermal break to separate and insulate the finished metal framing, reducing conduction and condensation, supporting the hotel’s energy efficiency. Loews Kansas City hotel’s finished aluminum framing with thermal barriers was paired with Viracon’s high-performance low-e products. As a leader in the hospitality industry, Loews demonstrates its commitment to environmental responsibility through numerous programs including Better Buildings Challenge, ENERGY STAR, Green Meetings Industry Council, International WELL Building Institute and the creation of its own Good Neighbor Policy. Loews recently was recognized for its portfolio-wide strategic energy reduction efforts with the 2020 Better Buildings Goal Achiever Award by the U.S. Department of Energy.
Natural light further reduces the need for electric lighting in Loews Kansas City Hotel. Those who enter the hotel through Tubelite’s Wide Stile Entrance systems are greeted with expansive stretches of glass to welcome the daylight and vibrant nighttime views. Transparent indoor walls help carry the sunshine more deeply into the hotel. The interior scope of the project, installed by AGP Inc., features Tubelite’s Interior Flush Glazed Framing and Medium Stile Entrance systems, which help define the retail and restaurant spaces.
Whether sipping a drink at the Horse Feather Social, dining at The Stilwell or crossing over to the convention center, the hotel’s main lobby, lower levels and skybridge link present the most visible connection to the public. Creating a welcoming and lasting impression, Linetec provided a consistent, high-quality appearance with high-performance finishes throughout the hotel.
After nearly two years of construction, including the challenges of building during a pandemic, Loews Kansas City Hotel opened in June 2020. Anticipating the opening, hotel manager Brian Johnson told CityScene KC, “The quality of this building is more than what was promised.”
Located at 1515 Wyandotte Street, Loews Kansas City Hotel offers a breath of refreshing hospitality in the heart of downtown. The $325 million destination hotel offers guests a choice of a lobby bar, a three-meal restaurant or grab-and-go dining. Fitness amenities include an indoor lap pool and spa.
Along with the largest hotel ballroom in the city, the hotel provides up to 60,000 square feet of on-site meeting and event space, and an elevated pedestrian bridge connecting to the Kansas City Convention Center. It is conveniently within walking distance to key attractions and other destination landmarks like the Kansas City Power & Light District, T-Mobile Center, KC Streetcar, and the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.
