The first step in the anodize process is to rack the aluminum material. Anodize racking methods have two primary functions, to carry the work load through the anodizing process from stage to stage and to provide a secure electrical connection leading to the power supply during the anodizing step.

  • Multiple racking methods are used depending on material type and requirements
  • The most common racking techniques used at Linetec are Weld, Bolt and Clamp.
  • Regardless of racking method, it is critical that the aluminum is held tightly and have a significant electrical contact throughout the process.

ANODIZE RACKING METHOD DESCRIPTIONS

WELD RACK

Pros:


  • Excellent Contact
  • Minimal material loss
  • Color consistency

Cons:


  • Non-uniform racking marks
  • Sharp edges
  • Limited to use for extrusions

Best Used For:


  • Consistent length extrusion
  • Colored anodize
  • All extrusions including small perimeter – flimsy dies

CLAMP RACK

Pros:


  • Small rack marks on one side
  • Customers can generally specify where material should be racked

Cons:


  • Slow / high labor cost
  • Not efficient / physically demanding

  • Fabrications
  • Railings
  • Louvers
  • Brake Metal
  • Small Parts

BOLT RACK

Pros:


  • Fast / Efficient
  • High load capacity
  • Minimum rack mark (1 in.)

Cons:


  • Limited to extrusions only
  • Must be same length material

Best Used For:


  • Hollow extrusions
  • High volume / same length extrusion
  • Flat, solid extrusions
