Clean, modern, soothing. The visual impact of Linetec’s mica and metallic color finishes on the exterior of the Kaiser Permanente San Diego Medical Center reflects the new hospital’s philosophy of high-tech healing in a patient-centered, sustainable environment. Opened in April 2017, it is one of few health care facilities in the world to achieve LEED® Platinum certification through the U.S. Green Building Council.
Kaiser Permanente worked closely with the design team of CO Architects and general contractor Hensel Phelps to create a medical center focusing on innovative care. The interior and exterior designs of the 617,000-square-foot, seven-story building reflect San Diego’s coastal colors and climate.
Bringing the design from concept to reality, Architectural Glass & Aluminum (AGA) selected Quality Metalcrafts’ AMERICLAD® products with durable finishes applied by Linetec.
For Level 1, Linetec painted the AMERICLAD AC-3000 1/8-inch Aluminum Plate Panel System, balcony plate panels, interior curtainwall closer panels and column covers in a Platinum Mica Sunstorm color. For all the other levels on the medical center, the curtainwall panels were finished in a Light Blue metallic color.
Mica and metallic coatings add shimmer and sparkle under the California sun. The color can seem to change with the way the visible light is reflected off the surface, depending on the intensity and angle of the light.
Protecting against UV damage and unwanted color change, both of the paint color formulations use 70% PVDF resin-based coatings. These offer the highest performance finish for architectural aluminum products, providing outstanding resistance to humidity, chalk, gloss loss, chemicals and salt spray.
Supporting environmentally sound practices, Linetec’s high-performance painted coatings are applied in a controlled facility that safely captures and destroys the VOCs present in liquid solvent-based paints before the finished products’ arrival on the building site. Thoughtful approaches, like these, contribute to enhanced durability for long-lasting materials and improved indoor air quality for healthier buildings.
“Every design and planning decision we have made since breaking ground on this medical center has been guided by providing an unparalleled patient care experience,” said Jane Finley, senior vice president and area manager, Kaiser Permanente San Diego. “Every patient will benefit from cutting-edge medical technologies, our integrated, model of expert care and most importantly, personal service.”
